Pinterest pin — the right size

Drop an image in — everyimg crops it to Pinterest's recommended 2:3 vertical format at 1000 × 1500 px and keeps the file lean.

Pinterest recommends 2:3 portrait — 1000 × 1500 px. Taller pins get cut off in the feed.

Why 2:3 is the Pinterest sweet spot

Pinterest is a vertical grid — pins compete column by column for attention. A 2:3 pin (1000 × 1500 px) is the tallest format that displays completely in the feed. Shorter pins waste space; taller pins get truncated. Pinterest's creative guidelines explicitly recommend 2:3 for standard pins.

Converting horizontal photos into pins

Most photos come out of the camera in landscape — the exact opposite of what Pinterest wants. A center crop of a landscape photo to 2:3 usually keeps only the middle third. Use the crop-focus sliders above to choose which part survives, and check the thumbnail preview: the bright frame shows exactly what your pin will contain.

Idea pins and boards

Idea pins (multi-page) use the full-screen 9:16 format — 1080 × 1920 px, same as an Instagram Story. Board covers display square. If you're building out a profile, process one key visual in all three formats in one session — the "Continue with your result" chips below the tool keep your image loaded between presets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal Pinterest pin size?

1000 × 1500 pixels — a 2:3 aspect ratio. That is Pinterest’s official recommendation for standard pins. Square (1:1) works too, but 2:3 gets more feed space.

What happens if my pin is too tall?

Pins taller than 2:3 (like 1000 × 2100 giraffe pins) get cut off in the feed — users only see the top part. Stick to 2:3 so your whole design is visible.

Why do vertical images work better on Pinterest?

The Pinterest feed is a multi-column grid on every device. Vertical 2:3 pins occupy more vertical space in their column than square or landscape images, which means more attention and more clicks — Pinterest’s own data confirms it.

What file format should Pinterest pins be?

JPG under about 800 KB is ideal for photo pins. Pinterest accepts up to 20 MB, but large files just upload slowly and get re-compressed anyway.
